Wall Street Rockets After Trump Pauses Most Tariffs – Is a China Deal Next?

In a stunning move that reversed days of panic on Wall Street, U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to pause steep import tariffs on most countries and instead apply a 10% universal tariff — except for China, which is still facing much harsher trade penalties.

The result? A historic rally in the stock market.

The S&P 500 surged 9.5% — the biggest one-day gain since the 2008 financial crisis — while the Dow Jones jumped 7.8% and the Nasdaq skyrocketed over 12%. Major companies like Apple and Nike posted double-digit gains as investors cheered the move.

Let’s break down what just happened, why it matters, and what could come next in this high-stakes global trade showdown.

What Triggered the Market Meltdown – and the Rebound

The Tariff Shock That Spooked Wall Street

Last week, Trump announced a new wave of tariffs targeting countries like Vietnam, with duties as high as 46%. This came on top of already tough tariffs on China, causing panic in global markets.

The impact was immediate:

  • S&P 500 dropped over 10%

  • Bond markets weakened

  • Analysts warned of an impending recession

Even major retailers and manufacturers, many of which depend on global supply chains, began preparing for losses and higher consumer prices.

Trump Hits Pause – But China Still Targeted

Then came Trump’s surprise announcement on Wednesday:

  • Tariffs paused for most countries open to trade negotiations

  • A flat 10% import tax would be imposed instead

  • China still faces tariffs of at least 125%, effective immediately

This partial reversal came less than 24 hours after the latest tariffs had taken effect — a sign that the White House was reacting to market pressure.

Stocks Surge as Investors Breathe a Sigh of Relief

Biggest Gains in Over a Decade

The stock market roared back to life:

  • Nike soared 11%, boosted by the fact it manufactures nearly 50% of its shoes in Vietnam

  • Apple surged 15%, thanks to fewer expected supply chain disruptions

  • The S&P 500 and Dow Jones staged massive rebounds, though they’re still down for the year

Even after the rally:

  • The S&P 500 remains 3% lower than before Trump’s original tariff threat

  • It’s still down more than 8% year-to-date

Still, for many investors, the dramatic reversal was a huge relief after weeks of losses and global uncertainty.

 China Still in the Crosshairs

Despite easing up on most countries, Trump doubled down on China.

China is:

  • The third-largest supplier of U.S. imports

  • Responsible for about 60% of U.S. footwear imports

  • Accounts for nearly 36% of clothing imports, as per the American Apparel and Footwear Association

Trump says he’s still committed to protecting strategic U.S. industries, including:

  • Steel and aluminum

  • Automobiles

  • Pharmaceuticals and lumber

He has also hinted at exemptions for certain companies, offering relief to firms that rely heavily on imports.

 Economic Warnings Still Linger

 Recession Risk Isn’t Gone Yet

Even as stocks bounce, economists remain cautious.

Goldman Sachs initially predicted a recession after Trump’s tariff bombshell. After the president’s partial reversal, the bank updated its forecast — but still warned of low growth and a 45% chance of recession.

Paul Ashworth, chief economist at Capital Economics, said the president likely pivoted after bond markets weakened, signaling deeper economic anxiety.

“Once the bond market began to weaken too, it was only a matter of time before Trump folded,” Ashworth said.

He believes Trump may now return to the 10% universal tariff he promoted during his 2024 campaign, but cautioned that negotiations with China will be slow and difficult.

Political Pressure Mounts Behind the Scenes

Trump’s reversal didn’t come out of nowhere. According to reports, he faced growing pressure from influential business leaders and political allies, including:

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk

  • Investor Bill Ackman

  • Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy

Ackman, who previously pushed for a 90-day pause on tariffs, praised Trump on social media, writing:

“Thank you on behalf of all Americans.”

 What Happens Next?

Will There Be a Deal with China?

In a follow-up appearance, Trump said he hoped for a deal with China but was not backing down from tariffs on key industries.

He also said he would consider exemptions for individual companies — a notable softening from earlier positions.

Trade talks with China are expected, but most experts believe a full rollback of tariffs is unlikely.

A Temporary Win, But Uncertainty Remains

Trump’s tariff pause has brought a huge sigh of relief to markets — and given Wall Street one of its best days in over a decade.

But the trade war is far from over.

China still faces steep duties. Key U.S. industries are still under pressure. And economic growth remains uncertain as negotiations drag on.

For now, investors can enjoy the rally. But they’ll be watching closely — because in Trump’s trade game, everything can change with a tweet.
